About Jonah Speaks

Evacuations Instead of Nuclear War:

A new, less-violent procedure for using nuclear weapons is to give a city "fair warning" before bombing, allow the city time to evacuate, and then not bomb the evacuated city. Using evacuations, rather than nuclear bombings, significantly reduces the potential damage from nuclear war. This allows nuclear nations to conduct a nonviolent nuclear war that neither kills people nor destroys property.

Nuclear weapons are best used coercively, to evacuate cities, rather than actually, to bomb cities or other targets. After a diplomatic solution is reached that resolves the war, people may return to the evacuated cities. Various international institutions and treaties are highly desirable, and perhaps crucial, to ensure that this evacuation procedure works properly and effectively.

Jonah Speaks to Nuclear War:

A new interpretation of the Bible Book of Jonah suggests an alternate solution to the problems posed by nuclear weapons. In this new interpretation, nuclear weapons are best used coercively, to evacuate cities, rather than actually, to bomb cities or other targets. The procedure is to give "fair warning" before bombing, allow the city time to evacuate, and then not bomb the evacuated city. This allows nuclear nations to conduct a nonviolent nuclear war that neither kills people nor destroys property. Read More

Substitutes for Conventional Warfare:

Just as it is possible to find substitutes for nuclear warfare, it is also possible to find substitutes for conventional warfare. These would involve several nations agreeing among themselves on alternate rules of warfare that do not require violence. The agreement would also specify mechanisms of enforcement, so that nations which "lose" a nonviolent war do not subsequently attempt to wage a violent war.

There are many ways of providing rules for nonviolent warfare, just as there are many ways of defining a board game, a sports game, or a video game. Accordingly, the real question is not, "Can this be done?" Rather, the important questions are "What is the best way of doing this?" and "How can nations be persuaded to agree?" I shall have more to say on this topic in the coming months. Please also feel free to contribute your own ideas on this subject. Read More

Organizational Mission:

Jonah Speaks is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to finding and advocating nonviolent and less costly substitutes for both conventional and nuclear war. Jonah Speaks is neither partisan nor religious and does not set forth a religious, political, or philosophical dogma. Jonah Speaks does not take stands on issues that are not related to its main mission, nor does it take a stand on the justice or injustice of particular wars.

The near-term goal of Jonah Speaks is to advocate substituting the less-violent procedure of evacuations in place of the more-violent procedure of nuclear bombings. The longer term goal of Jonah Speaks is to find nonviolent and less costly substitutes for all forms of warfare. If you would like to assist or contribute to Jonah Speaks, please call or E-mail.
